Original Art Panels: The Look for Less

October 3, 2008

We love the look of original art; the price, however, we can do without. Here’s a truly easy way to make your own original art panels with inexpensive fabric and wooden picture frames – no artistic skills required.

Choose a fabric to your liking – we chose this cool paisley print, but anything will do, even scraps of old clothing or linens, especially with unusual designs or stitching.

Then, pick a picture frame, and either frame the fabric inside, taping or gluing any excess fabric behind it, or wrap fabric around the outside of the frame, securing the excess on the back. Mount the frame to your wall, either alone or with others for a striking display, or prop them up on a table.

I have tried this before and would offer the following tips
1) Iron the fabric beforehand
2) If you can’t get the fabric to adhere well to the backing or it wrinkles when you try to hang it try either spray starch, fusible interfacing or even a plain old gluestick.
