Mums: Budget Gardening Tip

September 21, 2008

Mums -- formally known as Chrysanthemums -- are hardy in the landscape, and make good cut flowers as well. If you are interested in adding some fall color into your garden or onto your porch, which will last through the coldest of fall days – and beyond – be sure to purchase “hardy” mums, which can bloom from August through November.

To grow, plant them in containers or in the ground in full sun. Fertilize with a phosphorous-rich fertilizer to promote blooming. Pinch back the growth to promote a bushy appearance.

Mums will survive winter in most grow zones. In northern climates, apply a thick layer of mulch once the leaves have died off.
