Flavored sugars are expensive and sometimes difficult to find. The next time you need vanilla flavored sugar, make your own. Simply take 1 cup granulated sugar and add a vanilla bean. Store the sugar in an air-tight container, and let sit for about a week before using. To use, give it a stir to evenly distribute the vanilla flavor. Remove vanilla bean and reserve for another use.

Vanilla flavored sugar is a great substitute for plain white sugar in cookies, cake, coffee or tea, or anything else you might use sugar for. We like to use it in this sugar cookie recipe from Martha Stewart.
