Forced Bulb Kit: DIY

September 24, 2008

Forced bulbs are a popular holiday gift; get started now with planting and you’ll have a handy and inexpensive gift to give this holiday season. When you purchase a few bulbs to plant in your flower gardens, and set a few aside for holiday gifts.

The easiest bulbs to force are paperwhites, which require no chilling prior to forcing. Amaryllis, freesia and colchicum also require no cold storage prior to blooming and are easy to force.

You’ll need:

Bulbs for forcing

Containers, such as glass jars, Mason jars, or ceramic or terra cotta pots

Dirt or stones

To make:

Follow the instructions on the packaging for how to plant the bulbs, including depth the bulbs should be planted and watering instructions. Be sure to allow enough time so that the bulbs produce leaves and begin to flower when you want them to.

Or, package bulbs and dirt or stones separately, place inside pot, and write out the instructions to give recipients a truly DIY gift.
