Picture walls are the latest trend for your home and are a fabulous way to display family photos, but don’t let the trend enmesh you in conformity break out of the mold by making your walls your own. There are many unique ways to hang your family photos. Here is how we did ours for only $13.17.
Here is what we did:
We bought two simple black picture frames from Wal-Mart for $5 ($2.50 each). In order to complete our wall more cheaply, we asked our family for black and white pictures of them in a simple black frame as birthday or Christmas presents. The third picture was the first such gift. We love it.
Then we made black and white copies of some of our favorite family pictures. We also had these done at Wal-Mart for $.09 each. That’s right. $.09! We just scanned them in and uploaded them to the Wal-Mart site. If you don’t have a scanner, bring your prints to the store and someone can help you get copies made.
One of our favorite stores, Kirkland’s, had a sale and we scored this set of mirrors for $7.99. We got the black frames because they matched with our picture frames.
Then we mapped out how we wanted to display the pictures and the mirrors. This is the hardest part.
We taped two vertical piece of wax paper over where we wanted to hang the pictures, then with a friend (we used a spouse) held the pictures and mirrors up where we wanted them and drew on the wax paper where they should go.
Then, using a ruler we made sure that the spaces between the pictures were even.
Then we nailed. We used small frame nails at first, just in case of a screw up. Then once everything was hung and tweaked. We put up the real nails. And hung everything up.
It’s tedious, but so worth it. We can’t wait until the summer to garage sale and find some unique pieces of wall art that we can paint black and add to the collection. Tell us about your unique picture wall and send us your pictures and a how-to to casa (at) simplygoodmedia (dot) com and we’ll feature your walls in one of our DIY features! Also, leave your best picture wall tips in the forums or the comments below. We love your feedback.
