Angel Food Ministries: Budget Grocery Tip

We’re all looking for ways to save on our food budgets. So when we heard about Angel Food Ministries, which offers enough food to feed two people for nearly an entire month for just $30, we were anxious to try it out.
The program offers a variety of meat, vegetables and other foods for about a dollar a day. Each month’s menu changes, and can include fresh, in-season fruits and vegetables, several meats and vegetables, and other foods. For June, the package included:
1.5 lb. Rib Eye Steaks
1.5 lb. Hamburger Patties
2 lb. Pork Riblets
4 lb. Individually Quick Frozen Chicken Leg Quarters
2 lb. Breaded Chicken Tenders
20 oz. Supreme Pizza
1 lb. Mild Italian Sausage
2 lb. French Fries
16 oz. Sliced Carrots
16 oz. Mixed Vegetables
32 oz. Borden 2% Reduced Fat Shelf Stable Milk
6 oz. Pancake Mix
15 oz. Pork and Beans
14 oz. Ketchup
7.5 oz. Macaroni & Cheese
Dozen Eggs
Dessert Item
Be advised that Angel Food is not welfare. Started by a family who just wanted to help people who couldn’t easily afford to eat well, the program has since spread nationwide and programs are run (most often by church groups) throughout the United States every month. There is no qualifying whatsoever, and no limit to how many packages you can purchase. In addition, specialty packages are available each month, including items such as steak and fresh vegetables.

Our church just started this program. My family ordered the food and it really is a good deal. Just the meat alone would cost well over $30. So far, we are satisfied with the quality of the food.
The menu is different in the different areas of the U.S. I have not found it that good lately. If you have a bad stomach, or low fat diet you can’t eat the hamburger meat or the breaded chicken. When they first started it was really nice, but I do better now with coupons at the grocery store.
Yikes! Where are the veggies? 32 oz for the whole month? That’s a heart attack diet.
